OpenTV and EchoStar--some added (mis)information. The url included in Paul's post led to a Gateway Computers chart (I guess Paul was right on the case on that one) and thus didn't shed much light on the EchoStar/OpenTV relationship. Stew--your comments seem to get to the heart of the matter in the myriad relationships; thank you.

FWIW, this is what the NYT reported this morning (page C4--with some edits to save typing; sorry, I don't have a url):

EchoStar Communications Corp. said yesterday that it had received $339.5 million in OpenTV stock in return for agreeing to use OpenTV's interactive [emphasis mine] television technology on its satellite dish network..This spring, EchoStar's customers will be able to get weather updates and TV program information by clicking on their remote controls. OpenTV...has agreed to issue 2.25 million shares...6.8%...to EchoStar...OpenTV's stock trading at $165.625, up $14.75.

The text of the squib is not precise nor complete enough to draw conclusions, and the term "interactive" can mean many types of operations that fall short or outside of GMST's IPR. "TV Program information" is equally vague.

I suspect I too would follow Malone, Murdoch and Thompson.
