Durable Goods Orders for Jan. = -1.3%

New orders for manufactured durable goods in January decreased $2.8 billion or 1.3 percent to $214.8 billion, the Department of Commerce, Bureau of the Census reported today. This follows a 6.3 percent December increase. Excluding transportation, new orders decreased 0.5 percent. New orders for January 2000 are 6.5 percent above January 1999.

Weekly Jobless Claims = -7k to 278k

In the week ending Feb. 19, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 278,000, a decrease of 7,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 285,000. The 4-week moving average was 286,500, an increase of 3,000 from the previous week's revised average of 283,500.
