NEW YORK, Feb 24 (Reuters) - U.S. blue-chip stocks were hammered in late morning trading on Thursday with the Dow Jones industrial average falling below the 10,000 mark in a sharp and broad pullback.

"It's inevitable," said Bill Meehan, chief market analyst at Cantor Fitzgerald, said of the Dow dropping below 10,000. "But I don't think the Dow is particularly important to look at in any case."

I would bet strongly that the DOW holds 10,000 (maybe a slight dip below).

Close. Will there be a cigar?
