I need to point out that this is a *significant* achievement for
Com21 and for voice over cable in general.

The E1 V5.2 interface is equivalent to the T1 GR-303 (TR-303)
interface used here in North America. This E1 V5.2 interface
is an international standard. It lives on the "line side" as
opposed to the "trunk side" of a Class 5 central office PSTN
switch. It was designed to support remote digital terminals.
RDT is a GR-303 term but describes this adequately enough.
V5.2/GR-303 essentially extend the reach of copper loops by
providing a remote terminal connected to the central office
by a high speed trunk. Is this case E1 (2 Mbps).

The impact of this is that a phone connected to a Com21 cable
modem will be seemlessly connected to the PSTN as if it were
directly connected to the Class 5 switch. Phone numbers,
billing, dial tone, and management are all still controlled by
the central office switch. All class features should be available
to the subscriber. From a class 5 switch perspective, the Com21
enabled VoX system will appear like another remote digital terminal.

The article is correct in that Com21 was uniquely focused at providing
voice over cable before the emphasis for high-speed data came along.
I made sure the Com21 CommUNITY architecture would support voice.
I'm pleased to see they made this milestone achievement.
