Having looked at the situation I believe that the Dem media is aiding McCain's attack on the GOP and a core group, religious conservatives, because for them, it's win - win.

In 1998 the GOP almost lost the House because turnout among religious conservatives dropped by 25% compared with 1994. If McCain gets the nomination you can expect the GOP to lose the House as religious conservatives stay away. Even in the unlikely event that McCain draws Dem votes, those same voters will vote Dem in House races.

If Bush wins the nomination, the Dem media will have succeeded via McCain in undermining his previously demonstrated appeal to non-GOP voters and softening him up for their pro-AlGore and anti-GOP onslaught.
