I think you stated it correctly. I might add that the ability to produce devices out of SiC (other than blue LED's) is also discontinuous in that it enables heretofore impossible applications for solid state devices.

What is not yet clear is whether CREE's stable of patents on device structures and methods for processing the SiC wafers into devices gives them control of the "architecture". My personal guess is that to a large extent it will, but patents are only an invitation to sue. Much better to execute so well that you present such formidable competition that upstarts look for greener pastures.

LED will sooner or latter need to be commoditized if they are to become ubiquitous. The power/ high frequency devices will likely remain proprietary and command very respectable margins.
