Tencor Instruments Establishes Direct Presence In Taiwan

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 13, 1996--Tencor Instruments (Nasdaq:TNCR)
today announced the formation of its newest direct sales and service arm -- Tencor Instruments Taiwan.

Located in Hsinchu, the Tencor Taiwan office is another step in the company's dedicated efforts to
enhance customer support worldwide and will enable Tencor to respond faster to the needs of Taiwanese
customers.

Tencor Taiwan will provide local customers with direct sales, service, applications and technical
support -- a critically important capability in this highly competitive market. Tencor's newest office has
been established with the support of the company's long-term Taiwanese partner, Scientech Engineering.
The relationship between the two companies has been strengthened by a new multi-year agreement, and
Scientech will continue to play a major role in the operation and management of the new organization.
For Taiwanese customers, this arrangement combines the strengths of both direct, local support from
Tencor and the established staff of Scientech.

Commenting on the new office, Tencor Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Jon D.
Tompkins noted, "The exceptional growth of Taiwan's semiconductor industry is reflected in our
increased revenues from that country. Taiwan's contribution to Tencor revenues more than doubled in
the first quarter of 1996 compared to the same quarter a year ago." He added that Tencor's regional
approach of placing direct staff as close as possible to its customers is a strategy that has proven
successful in other countries. "Building on the recent establishment of our Singapore subsidiary and
expansion of our Japanese offices, the new Taiwan office furthers our efforts to broaden direct access to
Tencor personnel throughout the world."

Tencor Instruments Taiwan is located at 2410-2411 Ming-fu Section, Bei-da Road, Hsinchu, Taiwan.
Telephone: (035) 421089; Fax: (035) 421642.

About Tencor: Tencor Instruments, founded in 1976, is a recognized leader in the design and
manufacture of innovative wafer defect inspection, software-based yield management, film
measurement and metrology systems used in semiconductor manufacturing and related industries. The
company reported record revenues of $106.3 million for the first quarter ended March 31, 1996.
Corporate offices are located in Mountain View and Santa Clara, Calif., with sales and service offices
worldwide.
