What takes more time and resources, a tech install or troubleshooting botched self-installs?

A self-install that doesnt fly should have the tech do *exactly* the same thing as he would have anyway. No debugging- just do it all again from scratch.

zero pre-configured PCs were sold. The analogy to dial up is specious
Really? Its pretty darn easy to get PC's preconfigured with NIC's. It should be easy to get PC's preconfigured with cable modems too. (Why are they not available anyway?) Seems like a pretty fair analogy to me.

How many uncounted man hours did that take?
Tons. But they were the users man hours- not the ISP's. Give people the choice to do it themselves or pay somebody else.

Thanks for the info on USB. Sounds like a lot of other USB problems I've heard about. A good idea that just didn't work.

I guess that's why AOL has literally tens of DSL users.

I've heard plenty enough stories about AOL mailing people free DSL modems at the slightest interest. AOL cold calling customers asking if they want to upgrade. AOL advertising DSL on their site. Pretty soon I'll bet the AOL disk you find in your cereal box is gonna have a button you can hit and have a DSL modem shipped to you that day. AOL knows aggressive.

I suspect they have a lot more customers than we realize considering how short a time they have been at it.
