AH KR, What a thankless task. You are a hero to do it. Our school usually tries to pull people from the community to judge in their own areas of expertise (which was lucky for CW because as I said, his was not "decorative"). When Ammo hit 9th, he did his on the effect of water pressure at different depths while diving, using carbonated drinks and water in plastic containers, to show that drinking Coke just before a dive was not a good idea. He chose this because he hates science projects, is really into diving, and figured he could get a dive out of it. So he and Dan flew to the Keys one weekend to do the "experiment". Meanwhile I went to the arts store and was amazed at the cute borders and little shapes you can buy to adorn your project. I toyed with the idea of buying the blue border with little fishies on it. I didn't. Which was smart- ammo said no way would he have used it. But now you tell us that the first criteria is HOW DECORATIVE IT WAS??? No wonder he lost. That would be laughable if it weren't frightening. It's like the shelves of designer-approved, matched sets of books on people's shelves that have never been opened, much less read. The artwork chosen because of the color scheme, not because the owner is moved by it. The Steinway grand in the living room that no one plays and if you sit down at it it's out of tune, and they don't even know it.
SOmeone at a dinner party was saying that his company wanted to do an IPO with a spinoff. Dan was asking if it made business sense, and they didn't really know; their repsonse was that that's where all the money was.
We sat on the front porch last night. It's very warm here, very windy and the cats were wigging out in it, thinking the wind was attacking them, I guess. I know Dan has been very quiet lately. He seldom talks when he's stressed or unhappy, and I've learned to leave it alone til he's ready to talk. (Something I finally learned in counseling- things aren't always my fault or my responsibility)Finally last night he said, "DO you remember when you did Little Mary Sunshine, and the director cast me as the "Sincere" Forest Ranger?" It was true. It;s the way people always cast Dan. "I feel as if I'm still playing that part but I'm in the wrong production." I think a lot of us here feel that way. |
