Good Grief !!
This is Intel Money going down a RAT HOLE !
Sanford Ovshinsky (ECD) has got to be behind this. This crackpot used to work with Intel in the early 1970's on his Ovonic non-volatile memory. That project was a bigger boondoggle than Microma watches !
When the oil crisis hit, he jumped into alternative energy sources - bye, bye memory !.
A year or two ago, I recall Lee Iacocca and Ovzshinsky doing some wacked-out project with solar powered bicycles !!
Somehow, Intel must have a weak soft spot in its heart, but my call is that every penny invested in ANYTHING that Sanford Ovshinsky is associated with is P*ssing away SHAREHOLDER MONEY.
Paul,
Are you aware that ECD's phase-change technology (the same thing that is the basis for OUM) has enabled the RW industry? All the "biggies" (IBM, HP, etc) who were trying to develop RW technologies were beat out by lil' ol' ECD and Stan Ovshinsky. History has a way of repeating itself...
As I understand it cycle life has been the main stumbling block to OUM becoming a replacement for all types of memory including DRAM, SRAM, and Flash, and to an extent, also fast mass storage.
Because of its cell structure OUM can scale much smaller than all of the present memories and will provide huge leverage with the advent of future process shrinks.
