Mike:

the essence of Citrix's core business is allowing an end user to manipulate data being stored on the server.

This is a true statement. But you also have to look at the details of how this is accomplished. MetaFrame runs on Windows NT and Windows 2000 and is the server side technology. However, one of the cores (technically) to the Citrix solution is their ICA (Independent Computing Architecture) which is the protocol for efficiently moving screen updates, mouse clicks, and keyboard typing back and forth between server (Metaframe) and client (code Citrix writes to run on each type of hardware device that is supported (Macs, Unix boxes, Boundless technologies streamlined terminals, etc)). Each time Citrix makes an agreement with a new type of hardware vendor to cooperate in building and supporting an ICA client, Citrix expands its market (and its value chain).

Whether or not the Internet is used as the highway in between the server and the client is irrelevant .

The more highways that Citrix travels upon the larger its market and value chain become. Some REALLY significant announcements would be if Citrix can get Palm (the main PDA) and major cell phone makers to be partners. In terms of Internet support the recent NFuse announcement by Citrix is very significant. From what I can tell, it means that if a software company has a Windows product it does not have to port it to Java/HTML in order to publish it over the Internet. Just use NFuse and have field users interact via a browser. That seems extremely powerful.
