ECONOMIC NEWS:
TODAY, February 25:

** The U.S. economy sped ahead in the final quarter of last year
at its fastest pace in 3 1/2 years, the government said on Friday
in a report certain to reinforce expectations of more
interest-rate increases by the Federal Reserve to check the rate
of expansion. GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT, the broadest measure of
total economic activity within U.S. borders, expanded at a revised
6.9 percent annual rate instead of the 5.8 percent reported a
month ago, the Commerce department said. That was well above Wall
Street analysts' expectations for a 6.4 percent rate of growth and
handily topped the third quarter's 5.7 percent growth rate.
Commerce said the biggest boost to the revised fourth-quarter
growth estimate came from stronger spending by consumers as 1999
ended. It was the most vigorous quarterly expansion since a
matching 6.9 percent rate in the second quarter of 1996.

** The National Association of Realtors reported Friday morning
that U.S. EXISTING HOME SALES fell at a seasonally adjusted annual
rate 4.59 million units in January from a revised loss of 5.14
million units in December. A Reuters survey of U.S. economists had
forecast existing home sales at a unit rate of 5.04 million for
January.
