Re What is a SIM card
Binx, a SIM card is a small (usually fingernail size but you can get them on a bigger credit card sized carrier as well) exchangeable chip that goes into a GSM phone.
It actually carries your telephone number (I'm simplifying here but that is close enough) rather than the phone, so you can swap it into a new phone or a friends phone, and any calls you make will still be billed to you (rather than your friend) or incoming calls to you will now come into the new phone.
When you subscribe for service you get a SIM as well as a phone, or in some cases you can just buy the SIM. I think this concept will be carried forward into 3GL wireless as well, as far as I know.
The SIM is also used for storage, for example, I can choose whether the numbers I store 'in my phone' are actually stored in the phone, or in the SIM card. So again, if I swap my simcard into a new phone, I still have all my numbers. Coool.
Storage is very limited though, 32k from memory (yep, K not MB) so it is not a CF competitor at all.
