I just fail to see the long term appeal to re-inventing the MSFT desktop and all the apps that go with it. I see not one compelling reason why that majority of PC users will just move to Linux. Why? What do they gain?
Well, if you take that approach, you could ask "What do they gain?" by upgrading (or downgrading, whatever) to W2K. Why WOULD they do that? The answer is, "If you build it, they will come". Not compelling, but all the same, I believe it.
One of my companies puts software in physician's offices. Now, these guys SELDOM touch a computer (they always want in their office, then 3 months later it is moved to the front counter as an added workstation). But what they want is whatever the latest rage is. I am literally dreading the onslaught of all these people demanding W2K before it is ready for prime time (our policy is not to use ANY product newer than 6 months, unless there are very compelling circumstances). My point is, they don't need a reason. They just heard "Linux" from their buddies, and now they have to have it.
I could be wrong, but I think Linux poses a true threat to MS on the desktop. I believe Linux CAN offer a more stable desktop than MS (which isn't saying a lot). |
