you're on the right track, imo, installing blackice defender. glad you asked about how to update it, because there was actually an update waiting as soon as i installed mine.
to update, click the icon in the systray, then click the icon in the top left of the blackice dialog that opens. to check your version number, select 'help' from the drop down menu, then 'about'. i just downloaded the most recent upgrade last night. it is version 1.9.19. if yours is older, select 'blackice utilities' from the menu, then 'download update'.
tom, just for grins, did you check your hard drive for filename WINDLL.DLL?
