Ya, right.

"They are called majors because they have producing mines and juniors don't"

I would suggest they are called majors because they have large or "major" sized mines while many juniors have small to medium sized mines.

The distinction between major and junior has to do with the size of the company although many juniors only have exploration projects and do not operate.
