Short-term market dynamics have taken over the trading of Rambus (Nasdaq: RMBS). We recommend investors sell shares at current levels and wait for normal market conditions to return.

On Feb. 15, we reported on tremendous short interest in the stock, with nearly half of the company?s outstanding shares sold short. Short interest reached more than 8m shares recently and, based on market action, many traders have tried to continue shorting shares. Given that the spike in the stock has come without significant news, we are clearly witnessing a classic short squeeze.

Due to this squeeze, option volatility for Rambus is currently trading at all-time highs: the 10-day historical implied volatility is 235%. These levels are unsustainable and are further evidence that Rambus? stock price is now ruled by short-term market dynamics.

Last week, Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) reiterated its commitment to the Rambus platform at its Developer Forum. While the vote of confidence has helped, we believe significantly improved fundamental issues have taken a back seat to market dynamics. We continue to be extremely positive on the company?s fundamental outlook and feel the long-term potential for the stock is still strong. However, we suggest selling until the volatile action passes.
