Superconductor Stocks Get Hot--SCON-AMSC-ISCO-CDTS

by T. Spradlin

Among the leading industry groups of the American equities markets last week was the Electronics Components Controls {.ECC} group. The weighted .ECC index was led higher by one of the most active stocks of the past two weeks, Superconductor Technologies {SCON}. The stock traded almost three times its average volume and gained some 84 percent in the last five trading sessions. Finishing this week at $67 1/2, the stock is valued at ten times its price six-weeks ago. SCON develops products made from superconductor materials and related cryogenics that are applicable to wireless transmission technologies. The stock has traded seven times its 90-day average volume in the last two weeks - indication of strong institutional interest and capital inflows. SCON is a stock to watch for continued gains.

With the recent discovery that superconductive technologies may enhance the capabilities of existing wireless transmission infrastructures, Wall Street has begun to focus on companies like SCON and its peers. With applications in Radio Frequency (RF) filters, superconductive technology appears to be able to expand the relatively new and phenomenal capabilities of CDMA systems - this capability has brought strong attention to superconductor companies.

Here are some other Superconductor stocks for consideration:

American Superconductor {AMSC} develops high temperature superconducting wire, wire products and systems - including current lead, multistrand conductors, electromagnetic coils and electromagnets. The stock traded 2.7 times its average volume and gained 48 percent last week.

Illinois Superconductor {ISCO} manufactures proprietary high temperature superconductive materials and front-end equipment products for the wireless telecommunications industry. ISCO traded twice its average volume and gained 84 percent in the last five sessions. The stock has gained 3,700 percent in the last twelve weeks.

Conductus, Inc. {CDTS} manufactures electronic components and subsystems founded in superconductive technologies which provide electronic products with potential performance advantages over copper products and semiconductors. CDTS more than doubled last week and traded 2.5 times its average volume.
