M'bishi Elec, Intel Tie Up In Advanced Cell Phones
Saturday, February 26, 2000
TOKYO (Nikkei)--Mitsubishi Electric Corp. (6503) and Intel Corp. are working out the details of a technology alliance for the next generation of cellular phones, The Nihon Keizai Shimbun learned Friday.

The two companies have their sights set on cell phones that will use W-CDMA technology, a standard that will sharply raise the capabilities of mobile phones. Japan will be the first market in the world to introduce the standard in the spring of 2001. The total global number of advanced phones is expected to reach 700 million units by 2005.

Intel will supply Mitsubishi Electric with its StrongARM 2 microprocessor, which is specifically designed for high-performance portable information terminals, and with advanced chips used in cell phone base stations that are currently under development.

Mitsubishi Electric, for its part, will provide Intel with its technology for linking cell phones and base stations, an area where the company excels, allowing Intel to speed up its own development of chips for advanced cell phones.

The tie-up with Mitsubishi Electric will be Intel's first deal with a cell phone manufacturer. Intel has been trying to build partnerships with cell phone makers in its efforts to nurture chips for cell phones into a major business.
