Hello Dan,
Re: PS - the 6195 looks good so far. All the standard stuff, NT (SP6), Office (SP2), Novell and NT server connectivity has been uneventful - zero problems or "issues".
I'd sure appreciate any information you have about the MSI 6195 as you proceed with your efforts.
One of the things I had hoped to do last week was to get NT server installed on an Athlon 700 Mhz sitting in an ASUS K7M but things just got too busy. I don't know exactly what issues lie before me but I'm CrazyMan and I'll try anything <hehe>.
A couple of years ago I undertook the writing of a big database project as sole designer/programmer. I used the Borland (Imprise) C++Builder Client/Server and Interbase, Borland's SQL database. The final executable code is a little over 4.3 MB with debugging removed. I have installed the executable and the Interbase SQL client on one of the Athlon 700's. I had no issues whatsoever and the Athlon 700 is unbelievably fast. Since my customer was using PeeWee's, I had the compiler set to optimize the code for the PeeWee. The Athlon really slams through that code in spite that optimization setting. When time permits, I want to recompile with no optimizations, just to see if it makes a difference.
Though the program is running daily in the workplace, I've only shown one person that program running on the Athlon, and that person is my fine wife of many years. I sat at a 400 celery while she sat at the Athlon. We both tried to start generating the same report at the same time, but she inadvertently started a couple of seconds behind the celery. A few seconds later, her Athlon passed the my celery in a cloud of dust.
When her Athlon finished the report, she turned to me and said, "You're still waiting...still waiting...still waiting...", and just laughed. Her next statement was "Now that's the kind of performance I wanted to see from AMD, it really is fast, I don't like that waiting stuff!". (Disclosure notice: my wife is also an AMD long.)
Re (XBox): Is this ahead of expectations?
When I first heard that the XBox would be released in 2001 I didn't think that sounded right. Bill Gates and company have too big of an ego to let that much time go by. Such a project shouldn't take much more than a year and this fall sounds like a reasonable date for release. I can't see Christmas of 2000 being missed by Micro$oft. I have several reasons for thinking Athlon will be the processor for the XBox. For now, we wait.
Again, let me know how you folks get along with the 6195's. It's really great to have quality choices in motherboards. Have you heard that Tyan is releasing a motherboard for the Athlon in a couple of weeks? That's more good news, yet another motherboard announcement for the Athlon whose manufacturer has a reputation for quality and stability.
Kinest regards, CrazyMan
P.S. Did I mention that I'm really fond of the Athlon? |
