NeoMedia Receives Allowance for Patent on Print-to-Internet Link
Patent Awarded for 'System and Method for Using an Ordinary Article of Commerce to Access a Remote Computer'
FT. MYERS, FL - November 16, 1999 -- NeoMedia Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq:NEOM), a leader in print-to-Internet technology, today announced that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has allowed the company's second patent for its innovative technology linking print documents and products to the Internet. The patent is expected to be issued before the end of the year.
The patent was allowed for the broad and innovative process that allows familiar print media such as magazines, catalogs, advertisements, even product labels themselves, to become the user interface to the Web.
The allowed patent seamlessly links familiar media to the Web. In essence, the printed material or the product label becomes the user interface. This technology, along with our prior patented technology, enables everyone, regardless of training or experience, to easily access the World Wide Web on the Internet. These two patents, along with other pending applications, enhance the use of the Internet for E-commerce by making it much more user friendly as well as secure.
The patented technology provides for the automatic Internet linkage by using bar codes already in use, such as the familiar UPC labels found on millions of products throughout the world. According to the allowed patent, a consumer can take a product, scan the UPC label, and instantly and automatically link to a web page related to the product without having to enter lengthy URLs as is currently required.
"As our family of broad intellectual property patents increases, we will seek to establish IDOCsTM as the de facto standard worldwide for the Print-to-Internet Portal," states Chas Fritz, Chairman and CEO of NeoMedia Technologies. "As a result of these technologies, we expect that consumers will soon be able to download software and scan or type in many common product UPC codes, which will hyperlink to the related web page."
NeoMedia Technologies, Inc. develops and markets a patented IDOCs (for Intelligent DocumentsTM) family of products that link printed information and objects in bar code form to the Internet. The company also provides proprietary software for document management and production systems.
I can find nothing about an actual product this is currently available to use a bar code scanning device...the netpen that cross is suppose to have does not yet to be a working product.....also they need to get "paperclip to go" to work with a built in scaning device in a cell phone...some new cellphoes do have infra red technology but that is designed to send and recieve data to computers...wonder what neomedia is working on in this arena?....sure to be some wireless deal announced sometime hopefully soon that will be a bar code reader using paperport...the way wireless infrastructure stocks have been performing of late any such announcement would likely see a major run up in this stock in my opinion |
