Report: Albright Mulling Run for Czech Presidency

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Czech-born Secretary of State Madeleine Albright is considering running for president of the Czech Republic, a U.S. magazine said
Sunday.

Time magazine, quoting unnamed sources, said in its latest edition that Czech President Vaclav Havel told Albright a year-and-a-half ago that he wanted her to
replace him.

Albright has not rejected the idea but told Havel and other Czech officials that she will not make a decision until she and the rest of the Clinton administration leave
office in January, Time said.

A State Department spokeswoman declined to comment.

Albright will travel to the Czech Republic in a week to join in celebrations of the 150th anniversary of the birth of the first Czechoslovak president, Tomas
Masaryk.

The secretary is also scheduled to meet with Havel, Prime Minister Milos Zeman and Foreign Minister Jan Kavan.

Albright, who is fluent in Czech, was a baby when her diplomat father fled Prague and the Nazis who had put her father on a death list.

She returned to Prague with her family after spending the war in London -- only to be forced out again in 1948 by the communists. She eventually settled in the
United States.
