EMS Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq- ELMG) and P-Com, Inc. (Nasdaq- PCMS), have announced a second order from P-Com to supply antennas for P-Com's Point-to-Multipoint (PMP) wireless telecommunications network.
P-Com's fixed-wireless networks connect a central hub to several "points" over a shared wireless spectrum. They are ideal for multi-site businesses that lack access to a fiber connection, but still need high-speed data access between locations. The EMS Wireless division of EMS Technologies will manufacture and distribute the antennas. "The volume orders from P-Com are a major boost to our terrestrial broadband wireless antenna business," said Al Hansen, president and COO - EMS Technologies. "We believe that this wireless market has substantial growth potential, considering that only 2 percent of business buildings in the United States currently are reached by fiber. Our antenna technology solves the last- mile problem, providing wider access to high-speed communications at a fraction of the cost of fiber." EMS closed its first major order with P-Com in October 1999, with the second order finalized in January 2000. The wireless hub antennas operate in the 10 to 38 GHz band and feature patented lens beam-shaping technology. EMS' antennas are used in the infrastructure hubs of P-Com's PMP solution -- an access system that enables wireless broadband operators to offer voice, data, fast Internet access and video services cost-effectively to customers around the world. "We're very happy to have EMS as our antenna vendor for our point-to- multipoint system. They bring proven experience in infrastructure antennas from their Wireless voice antenna business. EMS' broad technology base in mm- wave beam-forming networks also can help us provide a migration path for our customers to future TDMA-based broadband systems," said Jim Sobczak, COO -- P- Com, Inc.
