Don:
where I can buy a stripped down Rambus based machine
I have seen the Compaq, Dell and Micron offerings. It is my opinion that Micron delivers a nice 840 based solution with the least amount of crap that has to be bundled with it. Compaq is the most expensive and Dell is in the middle.
However, I would wait about 1-2 months when RIMM production is more developed. Right now a 128 MB RIMM is hard to get and costs about $800.
I think what you really may be envisioning of getting should be available by May/June time frame. I would look for totally revised and improved Intel OR840 motherboard that may be available in about 4-6 weeks. It could be easily be put in any ATX case and hopefully RDRAM would inch down significantly in price. Also, I would have to believe that Intel's microprocessors will be a lot faster and cheaper than they are now as well.

Intel had another surprise price decrease in microprocessor pricing that takes effect Monday.

AMD is really giving them a run for their money.
