Intel to Establish Wireless Competence Center in Japan; Promotes Wireless Internet Access Technology Development with Centers in Japan and Europe
MONDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 2000 12:01 PM - BusinessWire
TOKYO, Feb 28, 2000 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Intel Corporation today announced the formation of its second Intel(R) Wireless Competence Center, based in Tsukuba, Japan. The Center's mission is to promote development of wireless Internet access technology through cooperation with leading companies in the Japanese cellular phone industry.
With the establishment of the Center in Japan, and an established site in Europe, Intel will help pioneer the development of technologies and solutions for next-generation cell phones. The Center also will provide a venue for Japanese companies to develop technologies enabling new content and services for broad-band Internet connection via cellular phones.
As third-generation cellular phones will be used for the first time worldwide in Japan in spring 2001, Intel considers Japan to be one of its most important markets for wireless products. The Center will play an important role in helping Intel develop products and technologies that meet the specific needs of the Japanese market.
"The Internet will be an indispensable part of both business and personal life, regardless if it is wired or wireless," said Nobuyuki Denda, vice president, Sales and Marketing Group, and president, Intel Japan. "Intel will continue to provide superior building blocks not only for PCs, servers and network devices, but for the wireless market segment. The Intel Wireless Competence Center is organized under the Communication Technology Group in Japan, which focuses on advancing a wide range of communications technology initiatives, working with the communications industry."
"With this Center, Intel will build upon the work we have been doing with Japanese cell phone manufacturers, providing technology such as flash memory, chipsets and software," said Ron Smith, vice president and general manager, Wireless Communications and Computing Group, Intel. "As Japan will be the first adopter of third-generation cellular technology, we look forward to working with leading Japanese cell phone manufacturers to speed the development of wireless Internet content and services."
In November 1999, Intel established its first Wireless Competence Center in Stockholm, Sweden, a global center of communications technology development commonly called "Wireless Valley."
Intel announced its commitment to wireless communications with the formation of the Wireless Communications and Computing Group (WCCG) in December of 1999. WCCG focuses on cellular and wireless communications, providing building blocks for computing and wireless communication devices and data applications in the growing cellular market. These include flash memory, chipsets, reference designs and software, digital signal processing activities, StrongARM* and Intel architecture technology for low-power handheld devices.
Intel, the world's largest chip maker, is also a leading manufacturer of computer, networking and communications products. Additional information about Intel is available at www.intel.com/pressroom.
