Palm after IPO..

From a post on the 3Com thread by Andre Williamson...

What's been sticking in my mind the last few days is that after this thing gets repriced and the deal is done Palm is going to have a LOT of money to invest.

And what's even bigger is that this thing is going to get valued so high that Palm will be able to go shopping with its stock, won't it?

Bottom line to me is that it's a real paradigm shift, one that is hard for a COMS-mentality investor to come to grips with. I don't like to play with the gravity defying stuff, and all of a sudden Palm has put me in that position.

My inclination here is to just hold on for dear life.

I've been meaning to post for some time on this subject. PALM will shortly become able to buy some other companies with its stock and I hope that it is aggressive in doing so.

Palm should set its target on many of the key software and wireless providers in the Palm market now. It must make a transition to software long term. There are quite a list of targets including makers of the palm web browsers and email programs, games, utilities etc. They might also consider going after Go America - a wireless ISP or companies like that.

At some point PALM may need to be out of the hardware biz all together. Handspring would make a good merger candidate with Palm's hardware division some time in the future.

Palm needs to focus on become the user interface, application and OS provider for a wide range of devices beyond PDAs. This transition will happen over time but we may see some signs of it soon if Palm goes after some acquisition targets.

Stay tuned and hang-on for the ride.
