CHINA SHORT TERM GLITCH: Monday February 28, 6:12 pm Eastern Time
Qualcomm still awaiting word from China on delay
NEW ORLEANS, Feb 28 (Reuters) - Wireless telecommunications equipment maker Qualcomm Inc.(NasdaqNM:QCOM - news) is still waiting for an official explanation from China after Beijing last week unexpectedly delayed roll-out of a new mobile phone network.

The delay came just days after San Diego-based Qualcomm had signed a contract setting the stage for Chinese carriers to introduce wireless phone networks using the company's code division multiple access (CDMA) technology standard.

``I'm sure CDMA will go into China - the only question is how fast,' Qualcomm chairman and chief executive officer Irwin Jacobs said in an interview.

``What the political or whatever other reason that is holding it back right now, we don't quite understand but I suspect it will become clearer.'

``Hopefully, it is a short-term glitch - if there is a glitch,' Jacobs added. Qualcomm stood to earn substantial royalties before China's No. 2 state carrier China Unicom delayed its plan to build a state-of-the-art wireless network.

The stock dropped almost 10 percent on Feb. 24 on news of the delay but has since recovered.

On Monday, with numerous wireless deals announced by Qualcomm and others in the industry, the company's shares rose 9-11/16 to 143-1/4 on the Nasdaq.
