I deeply regret the passage of the original format. It is a case of 'bells and whistles' programming winning out over elegant and simple presentations. I am a software developer and see this every day as we move into a total gui world. I saw it when we moved from CP/M to DOS and from DOS to Windows. Elegance, the ability to do a lot with a little, forces programers to give deep thought to what they are doing and to make sure it is highly functional. Excess memory generally lets them write sloppy code, or fill the environment with nonfunctional add ons. But many people today are less interested in working with tools than in being entertained. In that sense the new format is right on target.
