Firsthand Technology Value's numbers are amazing too. The fund, which opened for business in 1994, has racked up a return of 275 percent in the past year to rank among the top dozen of more than 6,000 stock funds tracked by Bloomberg.

Over the past five years, its average annual return of 67.3 percent makes it No. 1 -- trouncing its nearest rival, the Fidelity Select Electronics Fund, by 10 percentage points, and the Standard & Poor's 500 Index by 41 percentage points.
