SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 30, 1997--Global data networking leader 3Com Corp. (NASDAQ:COMS) was honored by Network Computing with eight Well-Connected award nominations for product excellence in enterprise and small business networking systems.

In addition, Network Computing recently recognized the company in product reviews with three Editor's Choice awards, citing its AccessBuilder, SuperStack, and CoreBuilder products for advanced network management capabilities, flexibility, and cost effectiveness.

"Receiving these awards and nominations exemplifies 3Com's commitment to providing technical excellence and value to its customers through cost-effective, innovative networking solutions," said Janice Roberts, 3Com's senior vice president, marketing. "We continue to design network systems that offer high levels of scalability, manageability, performance and ease-of-use, and are proud to be recognized by an industry-leading magazine like Network Computing."

3Com's Well-Connected award nominations

Based on product tests conducted throughout the year, Network Computing's Well-Connected awards represent the year's 50 best networking products as chosen by the magazine's technology and contributing editors.

"Our Network Computing editors worked at length to test the products most critical to IS and network managers in the distributed Real-World Labs," said Patricia Schnaidt, editorial director/associate publisher, CMP Media's Network Computing. According to Schnaidt, the products singled out in the Well-Connected awards are unique because "they are not a measure of popularity -- they are quality products tested over a networked enterprise firsthand by our technology editors. So we know that the 3Com nominations for enterprise LAN/WAN and small business networking products are truly innovative solutions."

Network Computing recognized 3Com products in the following categories:

-- Best Enterprise WAN Platform -- 3Com AccessBuilder 9000 ATM Access Concentrator

-- Best Enterprise Remote Access -- 3Com AccessBuilder 5000 Remote Access LAN/WAN Switch

-- Best SOHO Remote Access -- 3Com OfficeConnect family of small business products

-- Best Stackable Hub -- 3Com SuperStack II Hub 100TX

-- Best Workgroup Switch -- 3Com SuperStack II Desktop Switch

-- Best Enterprise Router -- 3Com NETBuilder II Enterprise Bridge/Router

-- Best RMON Management Platform -- 3Com Transcend LANsentry Manager

-- Best Ethernet Server NIC -- 3Com Fast EtherLink XL 10/100 PCI Network Interface Card

Editor's Choice awards

In its April 1 issue, Network Computing awarded 3Com's CoreBuilder 7000 HD Switch, formerly the CELLplex 7000 HD, with an Editor's Choice award for ATM edge switches. Tested in a multi- homed, load-balanced ATM environment, the CoreBuilder 7000 HD product took top honors against similar products from Bay Networks and FORE Systems. Network Computing described the product as "fast and furious" with "top-notch" throughput capacity. The magazine stated that users "can't go wrong with this switch," saluting 3Com for offering advanced performance, a high degree of expandability, and enhanced ATM and traffic management features at a reasonable price.

Adding to its list of publication awards, 3Com's AccessBuilder 5000 Remote Access LAN/WAN Switch was again honored for excellence, receiving Network Computing's Editor's Choice Award in a blockbuster remote access servers review in March. In a test that pushed remote access servers to their limits, Network Computing designated the AccessBuilder 5000 device as the "undisputed king of remote access servers" for enterprise environments.

Competing against Ascend, Cisco, Microcom, Shiva and U.S. Robotics, Network Computing praised 3Com's remote access device for its speed, flexible hardware, strong management capabilities, and security features. The industry's only remote access product with a multi-segment LAN backplane, 3Com's AccessBuilder 5000 provides high-density dial-up remote access to enterprise resources, offering support for hundreds of simultaneous branch office and remote workers.

In its March 1 issue, Network Computing recognized 3Com with Editor's Choice awards for its SuperStack II Desktop Switch and its SuperStack II Switch 3000 TX as part of a network switch vendor review. Network Computing saluted the SuperStack II Desktop Switch as a superior, cost-effective solution, offering abundant management solutions, extensive VLAN capabilities, and a variety of unique features, such as 3Com's PACE technology, which supports multimedia and other latency-sensitive applications.

According to Network Computing, 3Com's SuperStack II Switch 3000 TX "leads the pack in 10/100 switching solutions." The SuperStack II Switch 3000 TX was recognized for abundant features, sound management capabilities, and ease of set-up and configuration.

In its February 1 issue, Network Computing recognized the SuperStack II Port Switch Hub with an Honorable Mention for its superior scalability, ease of management and reliability. Network Computing commended the hub's easy installation, noting that 3Com's Transcend Quick Configuration Manager installation tool "gives you everything you need" to configure and operate the hub in minutes.
