German Cable Operator to Launch DTV
2/25/2000 PrimaCom AG, Germany's third-largest independent cable network operator, has consolidated its digital TV package and signed contracts with channels from Viacom, Canal + and MCM International. The digital service will include more than 80 channels and is slated for a May 2000 start up. Among the services will be a four-channel MTV package. Leipzig-based PrimaCom will be the first program provider to broadcast these four channels as a package.
MCM International, a subsidiary of Canal + (49%) and Lagardere (51%) and the biggest media group in France will contribute two more music channels. Other channels from MCM will cover lifestyle, motor sports, animals and traveling.
Nakul Dewan: "This exclusive package of channels, together with the interactive TV service that we will be introducing in May, is unique in Germany,? says Nakul Dewan, marketing director for PrimaCom. ?Because the decoder that is necessary for reception will be available at a very attractive price, we are expecting massive demand."
