I think Jonathan N is closer to the truth than you are. To equate JMAR's biochip alignment systems to the guy who supplies Affymetrix's cafeteria its paper towels is an absurd analogy. I agree that the technology behind the biochip fabrication process itself is probably Affymetrix's, but in a better analogy: who owns the rights to the semiconductor chip fabrication process used by Intel, Intel or the stepper manufacturer? Intel does, but I dont mind being the guy who sells Intel all of its steppers for all of its fabrication facilities. Likewise, I sure like being the guy who sells stepper/aligners to the "Intel of the biochip industry" (Affymetrix). Affy came to JMAR apparently some time ago (see the 8/12/99 press release announcing "additional orders" for these systems from Affymetrix), and started ordering these biochip alignment systems. In JMAR's January Press Release, JMAR announced that "its JMAR Precision Systems (JPSI) division has received orders valued at approximately $1.8 million from a leading DNA biochip company for several micro-positioning lithography alignment systems." So this means there were yet more biochip aligners sold to Affy.

I believe I have some understanding of where this system fits into Affy's manufacture of the biochips. My understanding is that they make the biochips at their facility using JMAR's equipment, then they sell the chips in large numbers to pharmaceutical companies, etc., together with a scanner of some sort which "reads" the chip after it has been exposed to whatever substance they are testing. I do not believe JMAR makes the scanner. But for now, I am happy seeing JMAR have the chip making machine.

I have followed AFfymetrix and I know that 1) they are teh leader in this field and 2) they are rapidly expanding their fabrication facilities. This can only mean that they need to make more biochips and to do so they need more aligners. How many? Who knows? But I cant pass it off as just trivial as you do when I see a fast growing market and I see JMAR selling to the leader in that market. Is my logic incorrect? If so, what am I missing?
