One day I think I'll join you in UTCI

i would rethink that one. utci appears to be in serious trouble financially...sales are dropping and cash reserves are only $135,000.00

this is the way i see it.
CREE high bright, SiC, LEDs sell for around 0.30 each. equally important they fit in standard packaging.

the white and blue sapphire based LEDs sell for around 0.50 each, are larger, and require special packaging.

cree is getting the handheld design wins for those reasons.
(most recent... nokia and panasonic cell phones).

and cree is going to complete 2 huge new factories this year. each is 2x larger than what they started last year with. then consider that cree is moving from 2" to 3" crystal growers. then that cree expects to increase yield by 300%. multiply all that out and you will see that cree is destined for exponential growth this year and next.

the red LED business is already commoditised...they sell for around a nickel each...cree is leaving that to the sapphire guys while they pursue the high margin white, blue, green.

as cree ramps production, i believe they will strip the high margin business away from the sapphire guys.
