Test show vaccine can shrink tumors
By Richard Saltus, Globe Staff, 2/29/2000
German researchers have dramatically shrunk advanced tumors in some kidney cancer patients using a vaccine strategy developed at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and institute scientists say they are launching similar trials.
The vaccine, which spurred the patients' immune systems to attack their tumors, eliminated cancers that had spread from the kidneys to other organs in four of 17 patients, says a report being published today.

Already, however, a Boston-area biotech company has obtained an option to license the method exclusively from Dana-Farber. A spokeswoman for Genzyme Molecular Oncology of Framingham said the company is sponsoring a trial of the vaccine in breast cancer at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
