Although I would have to ask some of the QCOM old-timers, does G feel a bit riskier than Q did at this juncture??
Re '96 Everest, like I said a lot of issues going on here. Mountaineering, especially very high altitude climbing like Everest, etc., brings out many emotions and actions in people. They may say one thing sitting in their arm chair but react totally differently "on the mountain".
I don't remember what Krakauer said about Anatoli (I suppose I should read again) but I do remember K* slipping away. Climbing is a team sport, but they do teach you to cut your losses quickly, sometimes too quickly. Booukreev was simply a stunning climber, similar to Messner, Ed Viesturs, and Ang Rita...
