The notion is not as far-fetched as it seems... the "StorageWorks" business is growing well but would probably grow even faster if it was a separate business, even if it was a wholly owned subsidiary - it could then be compared more directly with EMC. That would probably imply that the "captive" storage business (the storage sold as a part of servers) would not be a part of the spin-off. I think DEC was planning on doing that before the acquisition but DEC was so desperate for anything that made money that they never pulled the trigger. Just musing... CPQ has good storage technology but has not managed to get much visibility as a storage vendor, probably because a perceived "lack of independence" compared to EMC.
