The internet -- a product of government sponsored innovation -- the human genome project -- a product of GSI -- computers a product of GSI. Our economic growth -- a result of government subsidized education and research.

This proves that subsidizing something encourages it. The internet didn't take off until the government got out of the way. I remember just a short time ago that commercial activity on the Internet was expressly forbidden.

The ability of wisely run government

There is no such thing. Governments are ran by those who will promise everybody anything in order to gain power and then will use any means possible to retain it.

to point the way, to susidize progressive change,

Rejected. Who decides what change is desired and what makes their opinion any better than the consensus of market?

to punish economic abuse (like MSFT),

Rejected. MSFT failed to bribe the appropriate government powers.

to choose "computer chips instead of potato chips" (in Bosworth's unforgettable phrase) show that compassionate, intelligent socialism is the wave of the future. Free markets are subject to hysteria, cannot foresee even obvious futures, care nothing for the weak and halt, need direction and control. Need to be protected from their own excesses.

Free markets will in the long run direct assets into the ventures that will provide the largest payoff, that is, to their best use. No system is perfect in the short term. Socialism only appears to work when it has a vibrant capitalist system to leech off of.

And thank you for assuming that everyone is so stupid that they can't make their own choices and take their own risks of their own free will. That's the implicit message in the leftist/socialist/Mama Government model.
