Compaq Says Computers May Have Data Problem, L.A. Times Reports By Vivien Lou Chen
Houston, Feb. 29 (Bloomberg) -- Compaq Computer Corp., the No. 1 personal computer maker, has begun notifying as many as 1.7 million computer owners of a possible problem in the floppy-drive controllers of Presario desktop PCs that can cause data to be erased without warning, the Los Angeles Times reported. Compaq previously denied its computers had problems similar to those that forced Toshiba Corp. into a $2.1 billion settlement of lawsuits last year, the paper said. Houston-based Compaq posted a software ``patch' for the problem on its Web site Friday, though the company said it hasn't received consumer complaints and doesn't intend to settle a pending class-action suit in Beaumont, Texas.
Packard Bell NEC Inc., eMachines Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Co. face similar lawsuits claiming their products have the same defect.
