John, <AMD chief Sanders says Itanium will be a misstep for Intel>

Personally, I think Sledgehammer and x86-64 will be the real misstep for AMD. At the very least, it's not slated to appear until late 2001. By that time, McKinley should be here and kicking everyone's butt. Not only that, but Intel already has a foundation of strong server support and experience. What experience does AMD have in servers?

Finally, I don't think Sledgehammer will even be competitive against Intel's Willamette and Foster. If IA-32 compatibility is so important, then Sanders will face major embarassment if Sledgehammer can't compete against Willamette.
