NDB Rises After Saying 3rd-Qtr Earnings Gained as Much as 320%


Jersey City, New Jersey, Feb. 29 (Bloomberg) -- National Discount Brokers Group Inc. shares soared as much as 35 percent as the parent of online broker NDB.com and market maker Sherwood Securities estimated its third-quarter profit rose as much as 320 percent to $1.05 a share.

NDB, which rose 10 3/8 to 41 3/8, or 33 percent, in late afternoon trading, said it expects earnings from continued operation for the quarter ended Feb. 29 to between 95 cents a share and $1.05 a share. NDB earned 25 cents a share in the previous quarter.

``Volumes just keep going up, leading to a phenomenal quarter,' said Greg Smith, an analyst at Chase/Hambrecht & Quist.

In the past month, NDB.com announced marketing agreements with Web navigation companies Yahoo! Inc. and Go2Net Inc. The company said the new relationships wouldn't affect its spending on marketing and advertising.
