I reread the August 1999 GTR since doing DD on GSTRF. The problem that I have with satelite use for wireless is that my wireless cellphone is via fixed cell towers. I see the industry putting more and more towers up to expand coverage for an area. George wrote that "Even in the US, cellphones reach less than 20% of the territory. At least 45% of the country will never be ecomonically served by cellular."
It appears to me the GSTRF is fighting for this 45% which doesn't seem to be economically attractive.
"As the only way to reach the entire surface of the globe at once, satelites play a key role in the paradigm."
I have to believe that 90% of the current wireless users have no need to have expensive technolgy that allows the user to be covered anywhere he/she goes. Similar to needing a car that goes 170mph. If the need exists, a rental cellphone or Palm could be obtained. For the foreign countries unserved, why not build wireless towers? I see contractors put these up in four days or less, so it seems that costs cannot be that high. Labor costs including crane rental is around 10K per tower. I do not know what the tower or land rental costs though. I'm missing the attaction of GSTRF and Loral for the everyday user.
