The S&P 500 is not supposed to be a mutual fund. It is supposed to track the performance of a certain class of stocks thereby giving an aggregate number to stand for the "typical" stock of that class. It loses that meaning if stocks are chosen just because they appreciate. The dow sits like a turtle because the mature companies in the U.S. are sitting like turtles, that makes it a good proxy for the industrials. I would love JDSU to get a big boost out of S&P recognition, but I don't see it as a given.
