Now, back to the intelligent discussion of the election. Where is the center, towards which everyone has to move in the general election? On abortion, the center is only somewhat pro- choice, in favor of parental notification, and actually against late term abortions. Therefore, the overturning of Roe v. Wade, and return of the issue to the states, represents a moderate position. On gay rights, gays in the military and gay marriage are loser issues with the center, and therefore conservatives are closer on those. On affirmative action, majorities of both whites and blacks disapprove of quotas, although they may approve of outreach. On the environment, public opinion is "squishy", and it could cut either way depending on how matters are cast. On taxes, most people think that there should be cuts, and are for a roll back of bureaucracy. Everyone is nervous about Social Security and Medicare, but if the Republicans can say that they are dealing responsibly with the funding problems, they could cut their way. I am trying to stimulate discussion, so I will stop here, but the idea that the Republican nominee will have the harder time appealing to the center is, well, dopey....... |
