William, Sigma is using an IBM encoder chip on their board. Ligos' software can only encode at the quality that they designers built-in. If you set it at the highest quality, it will only give you that quality, you won't gain anything from waiting a longer period of time. A Dreamcast game company has licensed it the compress their games. It's quality is rated high, but it cost $299 for the encoder. ATI's Video Wonder card is priced at $199. I read on a news group that it is now scheduled for release in May.

All encoders have a fixed search range. C-Cube's range is smaller than Sony's, but C-Cube claims to have found the optimum range.
After video is captured, the quality of the encoded video depends on what you do with it. It's an art.
