Index Funds will simply have to purchase on the open market.
That's what I used to think. The various funds in a family are not independant. There is an overall executive and strategy board and it most likely directs one fund or another to pick up stocks that may be included in an index and instructs their transfer when the deed unfolds. If the original fund likes the stock they would likely replace it from open market purchases once the 30 days or so has passed and the excitement wears down.

Still, inclusion of JDSU into the S&P index may cause increased buying of the index funds by the general population and this would lead to a net purchase of shares on the open market.
