Thanks for your description of where CRUS stands in DVD technology. Obviously DVD technology is taking off pretty strongly right now with booming DVD player shipments and a DVD-ROM market that continues to grow, albeit slower than expected. It looks like for DVD "front-end" chipsets (DVD-ROM functionality), Cirrus' chip that was announced in 1998 is still leading in terms of integration multiple functions into a single chip. Every DVD player also ships with such a front-end chipset, plus back-end video/audio decoding.

Because currently shipping front-end chipsets have several chips and are not very cost-effective, I believe that when Cirrus starts producing these chips they will be in high demand, especially given the partnerships with major DVD technology providers that you alluded to. Would be a shame if they didn't make Sony's PS2 though.

However, I think there are also challenges in CRUS' optical storage business, one of which is competition from OAK Technology (OAKT). They have a highly integrated CD-RW controller chip that has been selected by 5 of the top-7 CD-RW manufacturers, and they are "working on" Sony which continues to use Cirrus' CD-RW controller. I posted a summary of a presentation by the OAKT CEO to the OAKT thread recently. OAKT also plans to announce a DVD related product in March (probably a front-end chipset like Cirrus has, although OAKT also has MPEG2 audio/video decoder technology). CD-RW is growing fast enough that CRUS may continue to sell a lot of CD-RW chips for a while, but they seem to have lost the technology lead in CD-RW at this moment.
