Ok, in simple language, a router is used to interconnect different parts of a communications network (including the internet). In addition to interconnection, a router can (and does) some translation. Also, a router can restrict access through it.
Yes, Cisco is the leading manufacturer of routers. Other companies (COMS, LVLT, JNPR, etc.) have limited exposure to the market.
The data passing through a router can be any digitized signal...voice, video, or data...the router doesn't care, as long as it's digital.
