Seems to me that China is fractured at the moment- power is in flux- I'm not clear on the following- and I would guess the Chinese aren't either- just how much their economic capitalist great leap forward has destabilized their political communism. Seems to ME that some of this tough talk is an attempt to crush some of that Western lovefest within China as well as to send a very pointed message to Taiwan. Of course I'm sure they hope the US will get scared and back off but if they really believe that will happen they are more naive then I think they are. It's a good story and you can't blame a paper for wanting to play it up a bit. God knows we get very little foreign news as it is. It's like the world is 98% US- which, last time I checked, it isn't.
