I do agree that OAKT has a more highly integrated solution today. That is because CRUS focused on DVD and OAKT focused on CD-RW. They are doing OK. But CRUS is years ahead of OAKT on optical PRML read channels. I look at CRUS as a much stronger company in it's ability to design and integrate very complex mixed signal analog/digital systems. OAKT is mainly a digital system/firmware house. The real value to CRUS is high integration. OAKT is lucky to be shipping products into such a high margin product today. As we know today, as prices come down and integration is a must, you must integrate more and more. The PRML read channel is a very complex DSP engine and requires not only good CMOS analog design but very good DSP system design engineers. This combination is hard to obtain. CRUS has a very large group of DSP engineers and hundreds of mixed signal design engineers. Prices in this area could easily drop by 50% over the next year. Also, both OAKT and CRUS compete with the big semi's in Japan. If you can't work with them, you are out. They dominate this area. CRUS is lucking to be working with the players that control 60-70% of the CD-RW and DVD markets. Over the next year this could be a problem for OAKT given that a combo CD-RW/DVD drive becomes the standard. I know that the big guys are working on this product for next year.

By the way I still stand by my statement that CRUS does have a part in the PS2. This was stated by Dave French in one of his employee update meeting!
