I think of it less as rewarding the Chinese than as encouraging the reform-minded factions within China.

It is also true that the latest round of Chinese bluster is a response to a demand by the Taiwanese President that talks between the two should take place on an overt state-to-state basis. Pres. Lee knew, of course, that the Chinese would react as they did, and that the US politicians, especially in an election year, would react as they did. It is not impossible, given the timing, that Lee could be trying to derail the WTO talks.

Any number of speculations are possible. I just hope everybody stays cool.
